L’Utopie Lenormand

The L'Utopie Lenormand deck has a compact size and high-quality card stock, which are definite pros. The vibrant and coherent art style of the deck's illustrations makes it visually appealing. However, one downside is that the guidebook needs more extensive background information. Despite this, I found the guidebook's concise information about each card helpful for guiding me during readings. Overall, I was pleased with the quality and portability of the deck and recommend it to anyone interested in exploring Lenormand cards.

Product description from the publisher

I have reviewed a couple of La Muci Design decks in my blog. However, this is my first Lenormand deck—not just the first I review but also the first I own. It’s quite exciting to try something new. Lenormand cards resemble tarot cards but are simpler yet harder to read. They show you a single object but refuse to explain further. It is up to you to decide what that object represents regarding your question. They might be a bit terrifying for beginners, but L’Utopie Lenormand manages to package the whole deal into an approachable deck.

ProsCons
+ Compact size
+ Card stock feels nice
+ The art style is colourful but coherent
– The guidebook does not have that much background information

About the Creator

Esra Dagtekin Mirt, previously a school art teacher, now owns an esoteric shop as the art director for this deck. She is also a blogger and manages Kickstarter campaigns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she founded La Muci Design, a small boutique shop. Esra has devoted considerable time and passion to developing tarot decks and other spiritual items. La Muci Design operates an online store where you can buy their tarot decks, oracle decks, and other spiritual items. Despite being based in Slovenia, their online store is accessible from anywhere.

Cards and the Artwork

The L’Utopie Lenormand deck contains 36 cards. The paper used is 300 gsm professional smooth card stock and feels great in the hand. One thing I’ve noticed, especially with the smaller tarot cards, is that the edges of the cards feel somewhat thick. I’m sure it has something to do with the small size of the cards, but I’m not sure. However, the problem is almost nonexistent in this deck, and the cards feel high quality. The cards are the same size as the poker cards (2.5″ x 3.5″ – 63 x 88 mm).

Although Lenormand cards are not my forte, and I have yet to see many decks myself before, the cards in the L’Utopie Lenormand deck somehow feel modern but respectful of tradition at the same time. The art style is vibrant, and the colours are used boldly but consistently. The cards feel like a harmonious set. This unity continues between the different decks, as the people on the cards, in particular, are very stylistically typical of La Muci Design.

The cards have two primary colours: black and some sort of purple (apologies if it’s not purple, although having studied art history, I’m a dunce with colours). The back of the cards has an abstract pattern whose theme continues on the front of the cards with a black border. The design, as a whole, is very impressive and inviting.

The Guidebook of L’Utopie Lenormand Deck

The guide starts with a brief overview of the history of Lenormand cards. It is interesting but gives the beginner little information on how to use the cards. Two spreads are also introduced in the same opening. Those spreads were a three-card spread and a five-card spread. If you are more familiar with tarot cards, you are probably familiar with both. In that sense, both spreads were a good choice, although I am interested in knowing if there are any spreads more specific to the Lenormand deck.

After a brief background, each card is presented in a few sentences. The author has managed to squeeze a lot of clear information into a concise package. I like it very much. The text sets the mood and steers the reader in the right direction with effortless ease. There is just enough information to leave room for intuition when reading the cards. As someone used to tarot cards, I find it nice to discover that there doesn’t always have to be so much symbolism.

Although the guide is short and thin, the paper feels high-quality. Because it is the same size, the guidebook fits in the same case as the cards. The pages are easy to turn because the binding is stapled. Some small guidebooks use glue or a similar method, which makes the pages difficult to turn. Fortunately, the L’Utopie Lenormand kit guidebook does not have this problem.

Conclusion

I am glad that this was my first Lenormand pack. The cards’ quality or the images’ attractiveness are definitely a plus for a beginner. The guidebook could have been more extensive in terms of background information, as I didn’t have an idea of what to do with the cards at the beginning. However, nowadays, the Internet is full of information, and it is relatively easy to find a guide. I also liked the quality and compactness of the case that came with the cards. It makes it easier to take the cards with you. I would definitely recommend this deck if you want to learn more about Lenormand cards.
