How to read the labels Historical what the old sources say. Later tradition what later writers added. Modern modern practice and my own notes.
Candle color meanings are one of the first things beginners look up, and one of the places where the internet is most confident and least honest. Colors do not have fixed powers. They are a shared symbolic language, a way of choosing a candle that reminds you of what you are working toward.
On this page I give you a table of twelve common candle colors with their usual meanings and what each is not for, some extra colors you will see in shops, the colors people use for the sabbats and a simple way to choose.
Where these meanings come from
Later tradition The color lists in modern spell books come mainly from Western astrology, Renaissance magic, the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and twentieth-century witchcraft and candle-shop books. Different sources disagree, and colors mean different things in other cultures: white is a mourning color in some, black a festive one in others. What follows is one common English-language version, not the only one.
Twelve candle colors
Modern These are common meanings in English-language candle and cloth folklore, with the day and planet often paired with each color.
| Color | Common themes | Often paired with | Not for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red | courage, passion, urgency | Tuesday, Mars, fire | blood use of any kind, or safety plans |
| Orange | creativity, warmth, social ease | Wednesday, Mercury | fertility or depression treatment |
| Yellow | study, speech, daylight | Sunday or Wednesday, air | replacing study |
| Green | growth, garden, money folklore | Friday, Venus, earth | money or health decisions |
| Blue | calm speech, peace | Thursday, Jupiter, water | silencing others, or anxiety treatment |
| Purple | ritual, study, special occasions | Thursday, Jupiter | psychic authority over other people |
| Pink | kindness, friendship, gentle care | Friday, Venus | forcing romance |
| Black | boundaries, mourning, absorbing | Saturday, Saturn | safety plans; real danger needs real help |
| White | simplicity, fresh starts, any purpose | Monday, the Moon | ranking people |
| Silver | the moon, intuition, dreams, reflection | Monday, full moon esbats | decisions made because the moon says so |
| Gold | the sun, success, confidence, celebration | Sunday, Yule and Litha | promises of money or fame |
| Brown | earth, home, stability, animals, harvest | Saturday, Mabon and Lughnasadh | replacing a vet or a builder |
White is the universal stand-in. If a spell calls for a color you do not have, a white candle, or an LED, does the same job.
Color across cultures
It helps to remember how local these meanings are. In much of Europe and North America, black is the color of mourning and white the color of weddings. In parts of East Asia, white has long been worn for mourning, and in China red is the color of luck, celebration and weddings. Neither map is wrong. If you grew up with a different color language, your own is the one that will speak to you most clearly in practice, and it deserves a place in your journal next to the table above.

How to choose a candle color
- Start with the intention. Write one sentence about what you are working toward. The intentions page shows how.
- Pick the color that reminds you of it. Use the table if it helps. If your own association is stronger, trust it: if yellow is the color of your grandmother’s kitchen and safety to you, it is a protection color in your practice.
- Keep it simple. One candle is enough. You do not need every layer of day, planet and color for a spell to feel whole.
- Use what you have. A white candle, a colored ribbon tied around a jar, a sheet of colored paper under an LED or the clothes you wear on the day all carry color.
- Write it down. Note the color and how it felt in your journal. Over a few months, you will build your own color list, and it will mean more to you than any borrowed one.
Candle safety
Fire safety. Put every candle in a stable, fireproof holder on a heat-safe surface, with nothing that can burn within 12 inches (30 cm): no paper, cloth edges, dried herbs, curtains or hair. Never leave a flame unattended, and put it out before you leave the room or fall asleep. Keep flame and smoke away from pets, birds and anyone with asthma. An LED light is a full substitute whenever flame is banned, hard to watch or you are tired.
Colored candles can drip and stain. Put a plate or tray under the holder, and keep colored wax away from fabric and wood. If you live with pets, children or anyone with asthma, an LED with a colored cloth or paper is a full substitute.
An honest note
A green candle on a Friday is a reminder you chose, not a force that changes money, love or health. Colors can help you focus and make a spell feel coherent. They do not make it work or fail.
