Lesson 14 of 3010 min

Numbers one to ten

Here is the secret that makes the Minor Arcana manageable: you do not need to memorize 40 number cards. You need four suits and ten numbers. Suit plus number gives you a starting meaning for any card.

The number tour

  • Ace: a seed, an offer, the raw energy of the suit.
  • Two: balance, choice, a first partnership of forces.
  • Three: growth, expression, early teamwork or early success.
  • Four: foundation, pause, structure, sometimes stuckness.
  • Five: conflict, loss, contest, an unstable middle.
  • Six: repair, giving and receiving, movement toward balance.
  • Seven: assessment, persistence, temptation, strategy.
  • Eight: work, skill, speed, something breaking open.
  • Nine: the suit’s theme nearly full, a personal peak.
  • Ten: completion, a full cycle, a shared load, ready to turn into a new Ace.

Putting suit and number together

Try it. The Five of Cups: five is loss, Cups are feelings, so emotional loss or regret. The picture agrees: a cloaked figure mourns three spilled cups, with two still standing behind. The Eight of Pentacles: eight is work and skill, Pentacles are craft, so diligent practice. The picture shows a craftsman carving coin after coin.

It does not always fit perfectly, and that is fine. Numbers are a starting point. The picture and your question do the rest.

Nine is not Ten

Beginners often mix these up. Nine is often a private, personal fullness: the Nine of Cups is private satisfaction, the Nine of Wands is tired persistence. Ten is more often a completed structure or a shared load: the Ten of Cups is a family’s shared happiness, the Ten of Wands is overload. Keep that difference in mind when both numbers appear.

The numbers rhyme across suits

Lay out all four Aces and you will see four kinds of beginning: a new feeling, a new idea, a new opportunity and a new spark. Lay out all four Fives and you will see four kinds of trouble. The numbers rhyme without becoming identical, and seeing that is one of the quiet joys of learning tarot.

Zero and the Majors

The Major Arcana have numbers too, from 0 to 21, but they work differently. A Major’s number tells you where it sits on the Fool’s Journey, not which pip pattern it follows. Some readers enjoy linking the Magician (I) with the Aces, or the Wheel of Fortune (X) with the Tens. That is an optional extra layer, and you can leave it for later.

Courts are different

The Page, Knight, Queen and King sit outside this count. Do not try to read them by number. We will learn them as characters in module 5.

A simple practice

For the next few days, whenever you draw a number card, say the number’s meaning and the suit’s meaning before you look anything up. “Three, growth. Wands, energy. So growing energy, maybe a project taking off.” Then check the card’s keywords. You will be surprised how often you are close.

Try this

Today’s exercise: Lay out the four Fives side by side and write one sentence about what they share and how they differ. Keep it short. Two or three lines in your notebook are enough, and there are no wrong answers. If you like, come back to the page tomorrow and add one more line about anything you noticed in the meantime. Small, regular notes like these are how the cards slowly become familiar.

Quick recap

  • Suit plus number gives a starting meaning for any pip card.
  • Aces open, Fives disrupt, Tens complete.
  • Nine is personal fullness, Ten is a finished cycle.
  • Court cards are read as characters, not numbers.

Keep going

When you have done the exercise, press “Mark as done” and continue with the next lesson, Wands. There is no hurry. If a lesson needs a second day, give it one.
