Pentacles are the suit of things you can touch: the body, the paycheck, the craft, the home. Their element is earth. When Pentacles fill a reading, the question is practical: work, money, health, time and the slow growth of what you build.
The climate of Pentacles
Pentacles are about resources, skill, the body and everyday care. Their gift is patience and steady effort. Their risk is getting stuck, worrying about money or holding on too tightly. Money and work are real, and the cards help you plan. They do not promise. For big money decisions, the right adviser is a person who knows your finances.
The fourteen cards
- Ace of Pentacles (new opportunities, prosperity, stability). A hand from a cloud holds a pentacle over a garden path. A real, tangible opening.
- Two of Pentacles (balance, adaptability, time management). A young man juggles two pentacles while ships ride the waves. Keeping many things going.
- Three of Pentacles (collaboration, skill, teamwork). A craftsman works in a cathedral while two people hold the plans. Skill meets teamwork.
- Four of Pentacles (security, stability, materialism). A man clutches a pentacle, with others under his feet and on his crown. Holding on tight.
- Five of Pentacles (financial loss, poverty, insecurity). Two figures walk through snow past a lit church window. Hardship, and help that may be nearer than it seems.
- Six of Pentacles (generosity, charity, balance). A merchant with scales gives coins to two people. Giving and receiving.
- Seven of Pentacles (patience, long-term planning, assessment). A farmer leans on his hoe and studies his plant. Waiting for growth.
- Eight of Pentacles (diligence, craftsmanship, skill development). A craftsman carves pentacle after pentacle. Practice and focus.
- Nine of Pentacles (self-sufficiency, luxury, abundance). A woman stands in her vineyard with a falcon on her glove. Comfort you earned.
- Ten of Pentacles (legacy, inheritance, long-term success). An old man, a family and two dogs gather under an archway. Wealth and roots that last.
- Page of Pentacles (ambition, new ventures, learning). A young person studies a pentacle in a green field. A new skill or study.
- Knight of Pentacles (hard work, responsibility, routine). A knight sits still on a heavy horse facing a plowed field. Slow and steady.
- Queen of Pentacles (practicality, nurturing, financial security). A queen holds a pentacle in a lush garden, a rabbit nearby. Practical care.
- King of Pentacles (wealth, abundance, leadership). A king sits among vines and bulls. Steady, generous success.
Reading the suit as a story
In order, the Pentacles tell the story of building a life. An opportunity appears (Ace) and you learn to juggle (Two). You build skill with others (Three), then hold on tight to what you have (Four). Hard times come (Five), help is given and received (Six), and you wait for growth (Seven). You practice your craft (Eight), enjoy the comfort you earned (Nine) and leave something lasting for the people after you (Ten).
Pentacles in your life
In love, Pentacles point to stability, commitment and shared life: a home, a budget, everyday kindness. In work, they are the most direct suit: jobs, skills, income and long projects. In spirituality, they ask you to ground your practice in the body and in daily routine. When a reading has many Pentacles, ask: what am I building, and is it built to last?
Remember that the pictures above describe the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith scenes. If your deck redraws them, look for the same idea in your own cards. Every card in the suit has its own full page: start from the suit of Pentacles. The keywords here are enough to start reading.
Try this
Today’s exercise: Draw one Pentacles card and write one small, practical thing it suggests you do this week. Keep it short. Two or three lines in your notebook are enough, and there are no wrong answers. If you like, come back to the page tomorrow and add one more line about anything you noticed in the meantime. Small, regular notes like these are how the cards slowly become familiar.
Quick recap
- Pentacles are earth: work, money, the body and craft.
- Their gift is patience, their risk is getting stuck.
- The suit tells the story of building a life.
- Many Pentacles ask what you are building.
