Lesson 21 of 308 min

The one-card daily draw

Welcome to module 6, where we start laying out spreads. A spread is a layout of positions, each with a job. We begin with the smallest and most useful one of all: a single card.

Why one card is enough

One honest card beats ten rushed ones. A single card gives you a clear daily focus or a quick check-in. It is also the best way to learn the deck, because you meet one card at a time, in the context of your real life, every day.

How to do it

  1. Find a quiet minute. In the morning with coffee, on the bus, before bed. Anywhere you can notice.
  2. Ask a simple open question. Some good ones: “What matters most to notice today?” “What helps me with this meeting?” “What do I need to remember?”
  3. Shuffle and draw one card. Any shuffle that feels natural is fine.
  4. Read in layers. First the keywords, then the picture, then how it meets your question.
  5. Write one line. The date, the card and one small thing you will do or watch for.
  6. Close the reading. Put the deck away so the session has a clear end.

An example

Say you ask, “What do I need to remember before this conversation?” and draw the Queen of Swords. Her keywords are independence, clarity and intellect. In the picture she sits upright with her sword raised and one hand held out. Your one line might be: “Speak plainly, keep my independence, and do not apologize for needing facts.” That is a whole reading.

Tips

  • Keep the question tight. One card does not like vague multitasking.
  • Write a one-line takeaway. A small action is more useful than a vague impression.
  • Look again in the evening. Notice what matched, without forcing the card to be prophetic.
  • Do not redraw because you dislike the card. If a hard card comes up, read it calmly. If you are truly unsure, draw one advice card asking, “What helps?”, and then stop.

The seven-day habit

Try one card a day for a week. Note the date, the question, the card and one sentence. On day seven, reread the whole week without forcing a story. You may notice a suit that keeps appearing, or a card that showed up twice. You will certainly notice that you now know seven cards much better than you did.

What about yes or no?

The one-card draw is tempting for yes or no questions. You can use it that way for small things, but treat the answer as a tone, not a verdict. For anything that matters, an open question works better. We will talk more about yes or no in module 7.

Try this

Today’s exercise: Start a seven-day daily draw: one card each morning, one line in your notebook, one line in the evening. Keep it short. Two or three lines in your notebook are enough, and there are no wrong answers. If you like, come back to the page tomorrow and add one more line about anything you noticed in the meantime. Small, regular notes like these are how the cards slowly become familiar.

Quick recap

  • One card gives a clear daily focus.
  • Ask a simple open question and write one line.
  • Do not redraw because you dislike the card.
  • A seven-day habit teaches you more than any book.

Keep going

When you have done the exercise, press “Mark as done” and continue with the next lesson, Three cards. There is no hurry. If a lesson needs a second day, give it one.
