Lesson 2 of 714 min

Intention, grounding and centering

Your goal in this lesson: to shape one honest intention and learn two skills you will use before and after every practice.

What intention means

Modern The word comes from the Latin intendere, “to stretch toward”. In this course, an intention is attention aimed at a chosen outcome, matched with an action you can actually take. Without it, ritual is mostly gesture. It is not a promise that the world will rearrange itself.

Magic is not a shortcut to wealth or a way to control others. Picture someone doing a small working for a new job. They still send applications and prepare for interviews. The ritual keeps the aim visible. Other people’s hiring decisions stay theirs.

Shaping an intention

First, name the pull. Finish two sentences without editing: “I am drawn to witchcraft because…” and “Through practice, I hope to…”. Circle one phrase you are willing to test for a month. Then shape it in five steps:

  1. Take the phrase you circled.
  2. Rewrite it in the first person, about your own actions or attention.
  3. Make it specific enough to check in a month.
  4. Add one ordinary step for this week.
  5. Write a review date in your notebook.

Some examples of the shift:

  • “I want to be lucky with money” becomes “I will track my spending for four weeks and notice one pattern.”
  • “I want him to notice me” becomes “I will practice saying what I think in conversations, with anyone.”
  • “I want to be more spiritual” becomes “I will sit quietly for five minutes, three mornings a week.”

If your draft only works by changing someone else’s feelings or choices, rewrite it until it is about you.

Grounding and centering

Modern Grounding means settling attention in the body and in contact with the floor, so you feel steadier. Centering means gathering scattered attention into one place you can return to, often the middle of your torso. They are related, not identical. Five to ten minutes most days beats a rare long session.

Physical grounding. Press your feet into the floor. Stand with your feet about shoulder-width apart and knees soft, drop your shoulders and feel your weight. Hold a stone or a cool metal object and name three facts about it: weight, temperature, texture. No imagery is needed.

Rooted grounding. Sit with your feet flat. Feel the contact points. If you like, picture roots growing down into the soil. If imagery is hard today, stay with the physical contact.

Centering. Place a hand just below your breastbone, or on the center of your chest, and breathe there for several breaths. On each inhale, gather your attention to that point. On each exhale, let go of tracking every worry at once.

The three-minute reset. Three full breaths. One breath feeling the ground. Three breaths with your hands on your torso. Three breaths naming one quality you want for the next task, such as calm or patience. Then return to the room. Use it before study, a hard conversation or any later practice in this course.

Try this

Today’s exercise: shape one intention with the five steps above. Then do the three-minute reset once a day for a week, and write one line about each day, even if the line is “nothing special”.

Quick recap

  • An intention is about your own actions, with one ordinary step and a review date.
  • Never aim an intention at someone else’s feelings or choices.
  • Grounding settles you; centering gathers you.
  • Physical grounding works when imagery does not.
