The Page of Wands is the student of the fire suit. A young person stands in a desert holding a tall staff and looking up at it with interest, as if wondering what it could do. The card is about curiosity, enthusiasm and news of a chance worth exploring. Here is what the Page of Wands means upright and reversed, the symbols in the 1909 card and how to read the Page as a person or an energy.

At a glance

  • Upright keywords: curiosity, enthusiasm, new opportunities
  • Reversed keywords: lack of direction, procrastination, immaturity
  • Rank: Page, one of the four court cards of Wands
  • Suit and element: Wands, Fire Later tradition
  • Astrology: Venus, Sagittarius Modern
  • Yes or no: Yes Modern

The pairing of suits and elements comes from French occult writers of the 1800s, and the Golden Dawn fixed the version used here in the 1880s and 1890s. The astrology line is the pairing printed on my first tarot deck. Other books pair the Aces and court cards differently, so if yours disagrees, follow your own deck. The yes or no lean is a modern reading habit. Use these layers if they help you remember the card, and skip them if they get in the way.

The card: what Pamela Colman Smith drew

Waite wrote that “a young man stands in the act of proclamation. He is unknown but faithful, and his tidings are strange.” Smith set him in a dry landscape with three pyramid-like mounds, the same kind of land the Knight of Wands rides through.

The salamanders on his tunic

His tunic is patterned with salamanders. In old European lore the salamander was said to live in fire, which is why occult writers made it the spirit of the element of fire. It marks him as a child of the fire suit.

Looking up at the wand

He studies the staff as if it were new to him. That is the Page’s gift: real curiosity, without needing the whole map first.

The desert and the mounds

The dry land is hot and open. There is room to explore, but little shelter. Enthusiasm needs water and a plan to last.

Upright meaning

Upright, the Page of Wands brings beginner fire: enthusiasm, curiosity and news of a chance worth exploring. Expect messages, invitations and restless creative interest. The Page wants to go look, not to have the whole map first.

Follow the interest with a small expedition. Ask the question, try the class, visit the place or write the first page. You do not need to commit to a whole new life to learn whether this spark is for you.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the Page of Wands can show scattered enthusiasm, procrastination or ideas that never leave the daydream stage. It can also describe immature behavior or a message that does not arrive.

Pick one interest and give it one real hour. If you keep starting and dropping things, that is information about what you want, not proof that you lack discipline. Notice what you return to.

Reversals are optional. Many readers never use them and read every card upright, and that is a complete way to read. If you do use them, decide before you shuffle what a reversed card will mean for you, and keep to that choice for the whole reading.

In love, work and spirituality

Love

Upright, playful flirting, an exciting new crush or a message from someone you like. Reversed, flaky behavior or interest that cools fast.

Work and money

A new idea, an internship, an exciting proposal or news about an opening. Reversed, many plans, little follow-through.

Spirituality

Trying a new practice out of pure curiosity. Reversed, hopping between paths without staying long enough to learn.

As feelings

As someone’s feelings, the Page of Wands shows excited, curious interest. They are drawn to you and want to explore.

The Page of Wands as past, present, future and advice

  • Past: A burst of curiosity set you on this path.
  • Present: Something new has caught your interest. Explore it.
  • Future: News or an invitation is coming.
  • Advice: Take one small, curious step.

A Minor Arcana card usually describes the everyday texture of a situation: a mood, a conversation, a task or a step. If the Page of Wands appears next to a Major Arcana card, let the Major name the big theme and let this card show how it is playing out in drive and the other things Wands rule. If it keeps coming back over several days, write down what was happening each time.

Is the Page of Wands a yes or a no?

In modern yes or no readings, the Page of Wands leans yes. Curiosity and fresh energy point toward yes. Tarot is better at showing the shape of a situation than at handing down verdicts, so if the question really matters, turn it into an open question such as “What do I need to know about this?” and draw again.

Affirmation and journal prompts

Affirmation: I follow new enthusiasm with a simple first expedition.

Reversed affirmation: I choose one direction and start instead of only imagining.

Journal prompts:

  • What am I curious about right now?
  • What small expedition could I take this month?
  • What did I love doing before I worried about being good at it?

The page in the tarot court

The Page is the student of the suit: beginning, curiosity, messages and apprentice energy. A Page can be a young person, a beginner of any age, a piece of news, or the part of you that is willing to learn. Court cards are not limited by the gender of the figure on the card: a Queen can describe a man, and a Knight can describe a plan rather than a person. You can read the Page of Wands as someone in your life, as a part of you, or as an approach to the situation.

Here is how the Page looks across the four suits:

  • Page of Wands (this card): curiosity, enthusiasm, new opportunities
  • Page of Cups: intuition, creativity, emotional openness
  • Page of Swords: curiosity, mental agility, sharp questions
  • Page of Pentacles: ambition, new ventures, learning

Learning a rank across the suits is one of the fastest ways to learn the Minor Arcana: the number or court rank gives you the shape, and the suit gives you the setting.

The history and art behind the card

In most decks before 1909, the number cards showed only a pattern of suit symbols, the way a playing card does. The Sola Busca deck from late 1400s Italy is the famous exception. Pamela Colman Smith gave every Minor Arcana card a scene with people in it, and that choice is a big reason the Rider-Waite-Smith deck is still the easiest deck for beginners. In Italian decks the suit is Bastoni (batons) and in the Tarot de Marseille it is Bâtons, plain cudgels or clubs. Smith drew every staff in leaf. Waite explained that the wands are “always in leaf, as it is a suit of life and animation”, and that small detail is a good memory key for the whole suit.

When A. E. Waite published The Pictorial Key to the Tarot in 1910, he listed these divinatory meanings for the Page of Wands: “Dark young man, faithful, a lover, an envoy, a postman. Beside a man, he will bear favorable testimony concerning him. A dangerous rival, if followed by the Page of Cups. Has the chief qualities of his suit. He may signify family intelligence.” Reversed, he gave: “Anecdotes, announcements, evil news. Also indecision and the instability which accompanies it.” Waite said he was offering “a harmony of their meanings” gathered “from all sources”, which means older fortune-telling lists, not his own reading of the picture. On this site I read the picture first and treat lists like this as history.

A spread for the Page of Wands

Use this spread when something new has caught your interest.

  1. What is calling me? The spark or message to follow.
  2. How can I explore it? A small, low-risk way to try.
  3. What will help it last? What keeps my enthusiasm alive.

Lay the three cards in a row, read each one on its own first, then read them together as a short story. Write one sentence for each position and one small action you will take.
